Rider Waite Tarot
The Rider Waite Tarot is one of the best known tarot decks. Almost everyone has heard of this tarot deck or has ever even got into contact with it. The Rider Waite tarot game originated in 1909, and the cards are based on the system of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, a school of magic that was concerned with spirituality, philosophy and magic development.
The images on the Rider Waite cards are based on clues by mystic Arthur Edward Waite (1857-1942), designed by Pamela Colman Smith (1878 - 1951). Both Waite and Smith have once been a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. The images on the Rider Waite tarot cards are simple but contain a lot of symbolism. The symbolism on the cards is the work of Occultist Éliphas Lévi (1810 - 1875). The tarot cards are published by The Rider Company.
The Rider Waite Tarot cards
The Tarot Card game contains 78 cards including 56 minor Arcana cards and 22 major Arcana cards. The major Arcana cards contain the most symbolism and the images represent different life stages, from birth till death. They therefor also represent the major changes in life. The minor Arcana cards are divided into 4 houses; Swords, Wands, Pentacles (Coins) and Cups. Each house belongs to one of the elements. Swords represent the element Air, Wands represent the element Fire, Pentacles represent the element Earth and Cups represent the element Water. On the minor Arcana cards , daily scenes are displayed. The cards therefore mainly represent the everyday things.
Unique about the cards of the Rider Waite tarot is that the cards are given a name, which makes the card's meaning and symbolism a bit clear in advance. When reading the Rider Waite Tarot cards it is normal not to read the cards (only) separately, but also in relation to each other and to also interpret them this way . This applies, for example, when using the Celtic Cross, a 10-card spread, in which the drawn cards are associated with each other.
What can I use the Rider Waite Tarot cards for?
The Rider Waite tarot cards are used to provide insights and advice, for answering answers to certain life questions, but also for future predictions. The cards are also suitable for questions about the past.
